CHIN 103: First-Year Chinese for Non-Heritage Learners
UW credits: 5
This course is an introduction to standard Chinese, with an emphasis on learning correct pronunciation and basic structure. It includes drills in oral use of the language. This course is open only to non-Chinese heritage students.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level Chinese or UW CHIN 102 with a grade of 2.0 or higher
FRENCH 103: Elementary French
UW credits: 5
This course focuses on the development of basic proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. It teaches students to communicate in French and understand the cultural context of the language. Methods and objectives are primarily oral-aural.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level French or UW FRENCH 102 or FRENCH 110
FRENCH 201: Intermediate French
UW credits: 5
This course is designed to bring students to an intermediate level of proficiency. Emphasis is on experiencing the language in context through a multimedia approach.
Prerequisite: Completion of three years of high school-level French or UW FRENCH 103 or FRENCH 134
GERMAN 103: First-Year German
UW credits: 5
The methods and objectives of this course are primarily communicative, with emphasis on speaking and listening. Secondary objectives are reading and writing.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level German or UW GERMAN 102 or GERMAN 111
GERMAN 201: Second-Year German
UW credits: 5
This course is a systematic review of German grammar, with intensive practice in conversation, reading and writing.
Prerequisite: Completion of three years of high school-level German or UW GERMAN 103
JAPAN 103: First-Year Japanese
UW credits: 5
This course focuses on elementary speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in modern Japanese.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level Japanese or UW JAPAN 102
JAPAN 201: Second-Year Japanese
UW credits: 5
This course focuses on the development of further skills in spoken and written Japanese.
Prerequisite: Completion of three years of high school-level Japanese or UW JAPAN 103 or JAPAN 134
MOD HEB 408: Modern Hebrew Prose
UW credits: 5
This course involves modern Hebrew prose texts, including essays, journalism, social media and fiction. There's an emphasis on vocabulary, grammar and composition skills.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level modern Hebrew or MOD HEB 203
SPAN 103: Elementary Spanish
UW credits: 5
The methods and objectives of this course are primarily oral-aural.
Prerequisite: Completion of two years of high school-level Spanish or UW SPAN 102 or SPAN 110
SPAN 201: Intermediate Spanish
UW credits: 5
This course involves intensive practice in speaking, reading and writing in Spanish, as well as a review of Spanish grammar. Oral practice is based on literary and cultural readings.
